Top Pharmacy Schools

If you are fascinated by learning more about how medications are produced and how they impact the human body, then you may have a bright future in the field of pharmacy. With a major in pharmacy, you will be able to gather the skills needed to play an instrumental role in improving patients’ health by choosing the best medications and avoiding adverse side effects. When choosing the ideal program, always remember that the best pharmacy schools will be accredited through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

As recent surveys indicate a 60% increase in the number of prescriptions filled over the last decade to more than 3.1 million each year, there is an ongoing demand for pharmacists throughout most sectors of the field in the United States. With an advanced degree in hand, pharmacists can become important members of the healthcare team with their expertise in pharmaceuticals to have tremendous job mobility and stability.

Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS)

Although an advanced graduate pharmacy degree will be required to become a pharmacist, the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) is structured to provide a scientific-focused preparation to undergraduate students who are going on to pharmacy school. Within a four-year bachelor’s degree program, you will learn extensively about the manufacture, production, research, and testing of pharmaceuticals. While the programs are offered to all students with a high school diploma, individuals with a strong record in biology, chemistry, physics, and health sciences will have the most success. Coursework will include:

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Microbiology
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Pathophysiology
  • Introduction to Pharmacology
  • Statistics

In addition to future career potential as a pharmacist with advanced education, graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) can be qualified for many careers related to the booming pharmaceutical industries. Possible career choices can be:

  • Drug Product Tester
  • Pharmaceutical Sales Representative
  • Biological Scientist
  • Chemist or Materials Scientist
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Pharmaceutical Researcher
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)

As a career-oriented professional degree program for those interested in becoming pharmacists, the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) delivers qualified students the essential technical competencies that are needed for success in this healthcare role. Offered either full-time or part-time at the top pharmacy schools, the degree generally takes at least four or five years for completion to obtain extensive experience in a pharmacy setting. While some programs may strongly emphasize different aspects of pharmaceuticals, the curriculum typically includes courses in:

  • Advanced Pharmaceutical Care
  • Drug Literature Analysis
  • Ethical Issues in Pharmacy
  • Disease Management
  • Immunology
  • Pharmacognosy
  • Business Management

After graduating from pharmacy school, many students decide to seek an additional residency training experience in pharmacy practice at a hospital, community pharmacy, clinic, pharmaceutical company, or some other specialized medical facility. Aspiring pharmacists must then earn a license to practice in all of the 50 states by passing a series of examinations, such as the North American Pharmacists Licensure Examination. Depending on particular career interests, the most popular career options available are:

  • Pharmacist
  • Biological/Medical Scientist
  • Anesthesiologist
  • Advanced Practice Nurse
  • Physician or Psychiatrist
